Q This is your second writing process assignment for Essay One. In this blocking stage of the writing process, you are attempting to organize the ideas and evidence you developed in your prewriting, shaping them into an outline. (A blocking plan is a lot like an outline, but a bit more straightforward.) Each writing process assignment should prepare you for the next. In this case, the prewriting was preparation for your blocking plan. Be sure to use your prewriting as a starting point for your blocking plan. Ideally, you generated all or most of you ideas and evidence in the prewriting. With the blocking plan, you're simply organizing those ideas, figuring out where and how they fit into your essay. Students have often reported to me that writing the first draft of an essay is much easier if they invest some effort into the blocking plan first. The blocking plan will be a blueprint for your entire essay if you do it thoroughly, and the drafting process can be simply a matter of fleshing out and fully articulating what you have in the blocking plan. The instructions below explain how to create a blocking plan; they also include a sample blocking plan you can use as a template. Blocking Plan Instructions ESSAY ONE.doc
